GAFCSC SCSC 48 CLIMAXES COMBAT POWER WEEKS WITH LAND COMBAT POWER DEMONSTRATION

The Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College (GAFCSC), Senior Command and Staff Course (SCSC) 48, has climaxed its series of Combat Power Weeks with a Land Combat Power Demonstration at the Battle Training Camp (BTC), Bundase, on Friday, 30 October 2026.

The Land Combat Power Demonstration is an annual exercise on the Ghana Armed Forces' (GAF) training calendar. This year's exercise was hosted by the 5 Infantry Battalion and aimed at enhancing participants' understanding of land combat operations. It also exposed them to the planning, coordination and employment of combat capabilities in a joint operational environment.

The Guest of Honour, Member of Parliament for Wa West, Hon. Peter Lanchene Toobu, commended GAF for demonstrating its operational capabilities and preparedness to defend the nation's sovereignty and territorial integrity. He described the demonstration as evidence of the military's capacity to protect the country against potential security threats, declaring that Ghana was a "no-go area" for anyone contemplating an attack. Drawing on his background as a soldier's son and experience working with military personnel during international peacekeeping missions, he praised Ghanaian soldiers for their professionalism, integrity and discipline. He also urged the public to respect the men and women in uniform, emphasising the importance of civilian authority, democratic principles and the military's responsibility to protect the civilian population. He further commended the organisers for the safe conduct of the exercise, which ended without reported casualties or damage, and suggested that future demonstrations could be organised at night to further showcase the military's capabilities.

The General Officer Commanding (GOC) Southern Command, Brigadier General Edward Awaribey, who assumed the role of Commander Joint Task Force (JTF) Warrior for the exercise, in his welcome address, described the demonstration as one of the key operational training activities on GAF's annual calendar. He explained that the exercise was designed to bridge the gap between theoretical instruction and practical application, while demonstrating the integration of fire support assets and combined-arms capabilities. He further emphasised the importance of interoperability and mission command in addressing security threats, including terrorism, violent extremism and transnational criminal networks in the West African sub-region. He assured the nation that GAF remained motivated, highly trained and prepared to defend the country's territorial integrity and sovereignty.

The demonstration brought together various combat and support elements of GAF, with the 115 Battle Group as the lead formation, supported by elements of the 1 and 2 Infantry Battalions, 16 Artillery Brigade, 15 Armoured Brigade, 14 Engineer Brigade, 17 Army Signal Brigade and the Army Special Operations Brigade. The Ghana Navy and Ghana Air Force also participated, highlighting the importance of inter-service cooperation in joint operations. Participants witnessed firsthand displays of riflemen, an infantry section embodied with a journalist, an infantry platoon and an infantry company, among other combat formations.

They also received briefings on military equipment, including the 81mm mortar, M3 gun, drones, pistols and artillery systems such as the122mm Howitzer and 105 Multiple Rocket Launcher. Further briefings covered the Signal Command Post and its operational cells, while the 115 Battle Group Commander, Lieutenant Colonel Prosper Sipe Koblah Adabla, briefed participants on the Battle Group Concept, Command Post Organisation, Map Orientation and Tactical Scenario.

Present at the demonstration were the Chief of the Army Staff, Major General (Maj Gen) LK Gbetanu, who represented the Chief of the Defence Staff, Lieutenant General (Lt Gen) W Agyapong; the Chief of the Naval Staff, Rear Admiral G L Bessing; the Commandant of GAFCSC, Major General (Maj Gen) J Wonje; and other senior military officers and distinguished guests.
