The Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College (GAFCSC) held a seminar for students of the Senior Command and Staff Course (SCSC) 47 and external participants from other security services, government agencies, and the media on Thursday, 21 May 2026, at Hamidu Hall in Teshie on Counter Terrorism/ Countering Improvised Explosive Devices.
The seminar, which was held to climax the Counter-Terrorism/Countering Improvised Explosive Device (CT/CIED) module from Monday, 18 May to Friday, 22 May 2026, aimed to enhance awareness and strengthen preparedness against the southward spread of terrorist activities from the Sahel region. The seminar had 98 participants, comprising 64 from the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), 26 from allied armed forces, and 3 from other security services.

The Chairman of the seminar, the Director General of Joint Operations at the General Headquarters, Brigadier General (Brig Gen) Okae Yeboah, gave a brief introduction to the seminar. He also welcomed the panelists, who included the former Director of the Faculty of Academic Affairs and Research at the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC), Professor Kwesi Aning; the Acting Commander of the 851 Explosive Ordnance Regiment, Lieutenant Colonel (Lt Col) F. Tetteh-Kumah; and an analyst from National Security, Mr Daniel Morrison.

During the seminar, Professor Kwesi Aning gave a presentation on strategic trends in terrorism and violent extremism outlining the concept of resilience and its importance, 3 key groups, the evolving nature of threats, and the role of technology and target selection.

Continuing with the presentation, the Acting Commander, Lt Col Tetteh-Kumah, addressed military preparedness and intelligence for counter-IED operations in Ghana, focusing on enhancing resilience through strategy, operations, and policy. Mr Daniel Morrison also delivered a lecture on countering terrorism and IED threats in Ghana through strategic operations and policy enhancement.

The Intensive seminar ended in an interactive discussion between the students and the panelists on Counter Terrorism/ Countering Improvised Explosive Devices.
